PE and Sport Premium
At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we recognise the important role that physical education and sport play in supporting the health and wellbeing of our pupils. We believe that a broad, innovative and engaging PE curriculum, alongside a range of extra-curricular opportunities, has a positive impact on children’s confidence, concentration, attitudes to learning and overall academic achievement.
The Primary PE and Sport Premium enables the school to further develop and enhance our provision, ensuring that all pupils have access to high-quality physical education and sporting opportunities.
This funding supports the school to:
-
Employ additional sports specialists and coaches to work alongside teachers.
-
Increase participation in competitive sports competitions and inter-school events.
-
Provide professional development and training for staff to improve the quality of PE teaching.
-
Extend extra-curricular sports clubs and activities for pupils.
What is the PE and Sport Premium?
The PE and Sport Premium is government funding provided directly to primary schools to improve the quality of PE and sport for all pupils. The funding is provided through the Department for Education, alongside the Departments for Health and Culture, Media and Sport.
Schools receive a base amount of funding plus an additional amount per pupil, which must be used to make sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education, physical activity and sport.
How the Funding May Be Used
Schools have the flexibility to decide how best to use the funding to meet the needs of their pupils. Possible uses include:
-
Employing specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside class teachers.
-
Providing additional sports clubs and physical activity opportunities for pupils.
-
Offering professional development and training for staff to improve PE teaching.
-
Providing cover to allow teachers to attend PE and sport training.
-
Increasing participation in competitive sport and school games competitions.
